30th Birthday Celebrations at East Derwent Little Athletics Centre This season marks the 30th Birthday milestone of Little Athletics in the Brighton Municipality. The East Derwent Centre which now operates at Weily Park was founded by Michael Aird 30 years ago commencing at the Brighton School. The Centre has changed dramatically over the years from timing races with hand held stop watches to the fully automated timing gates of today. The Centre will celebrate throughout the season with numerous special events planned including a Disco, Birthday Dinner and Multi-Event. However, the Big Birthday Bonanza planned for Saturday the 19th of November will definitely be a highlight on the calendar. All registered athletes will be invited to one huge birthday party at Weily Park, with fun activities, a handicap race, Birthday Cake, Balloons, Bubbles, and Special Birthday presents for all children in attendance. Our new mascots ‘Eddie’ and ‘Dottie’ will also make an appearance. If you have never been involved with athletics before, this season is a great time to join with so much on offer at East Derwent. There are many opportunities to win special awards and prizes just by participating during our birthday year. East Derwent will hold a Registration Night and Free BBQ on Friday the 23rd of September at Weily Park from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. Register on the night and go into a special ‘Early Bird Draw’ to win a portable tv/dvd player. The season commences with a twilight meet on Friday the 30th September at Weily Park at 5.15pm, to avoid a clash with the AFL Grand Final. The following week on Saturday the 8th of October we commence the normal Saturday morning meets at 8.45am. Children can register any time up to Christmas. They must be between the ages of 5 and 14 as of the 30th September. East Derwent also offers a Tiny Tots Program for 3 to 4 year olds, and as of this season it is open to any child, not just siblings of registered athletes. Athletes at East Derwent come from as many as 20 different schools including both state and private making it a great place to make new friendships. The Centre is run by a group of very dedicated and passionate volunteers from many walks of life. East Derwent was a finalist in the Tasmania Sport Awards last season, recognising its commitment and support to young people in the general community. So why not join the fun this season and be a part of the celebrations!
